This question reminds me of a herculean task I had trying to assist my cousin to overcome his addiction to computer games.
A few months ago, I encountered a tough task to get my 10 years old cousin who was addicted to playing a game called Minecraft. This got his parents worried because the excessive amount of time he spent on his tablet was having severe impacts on his academic performance.
To help him change this habit, I invited my cousin to live with me during the summer holidays which gave me complete control over him. Together with him, we designed a schedule for him to play his favourite games for only one hour in the morning and two hours before bedtime.
During the day, I would accompany him to a swimming facility as well as to the movie to take his mind off online games.
This was quite a challenge for me because it was the first time I had to face such a daunting task. However, I was equal to the challenge as the outcome was amazing as my cousin drastically changed his habit of playing computer games throughout the day.
This is a time when I encountered a tough challenge.
Do you think parents should give kids challenges?
Yes, I subscribe to parents or guardians giving their kids challenges. In my humble opinion, this is one of the ways to train children how to overcome challenges that they might face in their life. However, the task should be commensurate to the child’s level. In other words, parents shouldn’t set tasks that are away beyond children. For example, if the tasks are unachievable, children may inadvertently be inhibited in due course.
What challenges do you think children might have to face up to?
Well, I think the challenges offspring might encounter in life are varied and complex. The first challenge would be for children to get satisfactory jobs that could give them a decent lifestyle. To achieve this, they must excel in their studies in order to stand out when they apply for jobs. The second challenge is making the right choices either in choosing their life partner or deciding what their priorities are.
